2018.19 Snow School Awards

Choosing award winners this season felt like a nearly impossible task. Sitting around our table, discussing who we thought earned what awards, we became very aware that this season was unlike any other for many reasons: a distinct lack of instructors that needed support or mid-season reviews, a strong prominence of instructors that were hungry to improve, and a unique resilience among a group that was pushed much harder than we wanted to push. Trust us, no-one went went unnoticed and there were many more names mentioned in discussion than could be listed here.

A huge congratulations to all of our winners, runners-up and honourable mentions, and to all those that were so very close.

The TOMAS ZELENKA AWARD (First Annual Award)

Awarded to the most valuable member of Snow School.

Winner: Tomas Zelenka
Tomas has been with the Snow School for many years now and is often described as a workhorse. He lives and breathes this industry. Healthy or injured, he will find a way to make himself useful. Once he does, we can’t imagine life without him. He has been so valuable to the snow school, and yet, so unrecognized due to his quiet demeanor, that he is the inspiration for the creation of this award. We could think of nothing better than to not only recognize him, but to name the award after him so that future generations of the Snow School can strive to uphold the exceptional standard that he has set.

SKI INSTRUCTOR of the Year

Awarded to the ski instructor with the most all-around outstanding performance.

Winner: Marius Eckert
The choice for ski instructor of the year was extremely hard to make, but we settled on someone who seemingly never had a bad day. Someone that always had a smile on his face, always made those around him happy, never had a bad lesson, and always brought his A-game. And to top it off he was new to Cypress this winter.

Runner Up: Louis Rumball
The runner-up ski instructor of the year is a veteran of the Cypress Snow School. Well into his 5th season, this instructor has demonstrated an incredible amount of growth in the last season. He has evolved from being ‘just another good instructor’ to someone who is turning into an expert at teaching any kind of lesson. This season, he made himself available to help any department that needed it, helping just for the sake of helping, and being a true leader on snow.

Honourable Mentions: Jeppe Kjaer, Connor Stafford, Matt Smith, Matt Christiansen, Magnus Vestergaard, Kate Boddington, Joe Halliday, Beth Couldrick, Theo Wildgoose, Jaanika Jogi

SNOWBOARD INSTRUCTOR of the Year

Awarded to the snowboard instructor with the most all-around outstanding performance.

Winner: Laren Pudek
Being the Snowboard Instructor of the Year is a truly special accomplishment; the snowboarders at Cypress are have the wildest and loudest personalities. To select from these unique personalities is a huge task but realized that the snowboarder that put together the most special season among all the greatest we have is someone that has quietly gone unnoticed for all 3 seasons of her time in Snow School and yes is a powerhouse in a world of alpha male personalities.

Runner Up: Jay Rathbone
Our runner-up SB Instructor of the year also happens to be last year’s Rookie of the year. He has stepped up and put together a season that can only be described as ‘solid.’ Always reliable, willing to do anything, and modelling a great lesson every time he is on snow.

Honourable Mentions:  Jozef Lopaski, Jack Goddard, Alex Poll
