2023.24 Instructor Time Commitments

To work with us, you must be able to meet the following criteria:

  • Ability to attend Pre-Season Orientation (see below)

  • Regular availability from December 2, 2023, to March 31, 2024.

  • Regular availability through the Winter Holiday Availability (December 23 to January 7). You cannot miss a shift over the holiday period.

Start Date: Dependent on weather, terrain availability, and snow but is usually in late November.

Status changes: (PT to FT & vice-versa) and changes to your committed days must be approved by a Manager.

OrientationS

All instructors MUST attend one Indoor & one On-Snow Orientation prior to commencing work.

GUARANTEED HOURS

Instructors are paid for teaching/working time with a minimum guarantee of hours.

  • Should the employee start work and decide not to accept a full schedule, no hours will be paid.

  • Should employee start work and be sent home due to uncontrollable circumstances (eg. Mountain closure) a minimum of 2 hours will be paid.

  • Should the employee arrive at work when they are not scheduled, no hours will be paid.

SHIFTS & HOURS

  • Shifts may be scheduled to start and end anywhere between 7:30 am to 10:00 pm

  • Shift lengths will be 3, 8, or 10 hours.

  • Full-Time Instructors may work under an “Averaging Agreement”: Hours will be averaged over a one-week period (Monday through Sunday) and that overtime pay will be paid if you work more than 40 hours per week on average. Overtime must be pre-approved in writing by a Manager.

  • Full-Time Instructors can expect to work between 20 and 40 hours per week during the regular season depending on conditions and volume (see Working Conditions below) and Part-Time hours at the start and end of the season.

  • November, early December, and April Snow School operations are usually limited to private lessons only which are paid at request rates, but there is no guarantee of hours during these months. 

  • Shifts and hours are allocated on a seniority system that considers the following:

    o   Position (Supervisor, Trainers, Team Leaders, Instructors, etc.)

    o   Status (Full-Time, Part-Time Plus, Part-Time…)

    o   Length of service at Cypress

    o   Certifications & experience

    o   Performance (Private requests, initiative, enthusiasm, positive guest comments, etc.)

ABSENTEEISM, TARDINESS & SICK DAYS

  • Please give a minimum of 24 hours’ notice when calling in sick.

  • A second failure to give 24 hours’ notice to call in sick may be considered absenteeism and may result in a written warning or termination of employment.

  • A maximum of 3 sick days are allowed each season without a doctor’s note.

  • Tardiness will result in a written warning. A second offense may result in termination of employment.

SHIFT & STATUS CHANGES

  • All shift changes require you to find replacements for your shifts.

  • If you know you will miss a shift it is your responsibility to notify the scheduler in writing with at least 2 weeks’ notice. Notification does not guarantee that you are exempt from work.

TIME OFF REQUESTS

  • Time off requests must be made WITH AT LEAST 30 DAYS’ NOTICE.

  • You may be required to find a replacement for any missed shifts, even if your time off request is approved.

  • Additional conditions and consequences may apply even if time off is approved.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Cypress Mountain staffing requirements for the 2023/24 winter operations are contingent on many factors including snow conditions and business volume.  If you accept this offer of employment with Cypress Mountain, you acknowledge that your working days, hours, and even your ‘role & responsibilities’ may fluctuate depending on the operational requirements of Cypress Mountain and you may be subject to temporary or permanent layoffs at any time. In addition, Cypress Mountain reserves the right to terminate your employment at any time for cause without notice (or payment in lieu of notice), including any breach of the Cypress Mountain policies and procedures.

Probationary Period:

The first ninety days as an employee of Cypress Mountain will be a probationary period during which your performance in the duties and responsibilities of your position will be evaluated. During this period your employment may be terminated without notice or payment in lieu of notice for general unsuitability for the position, failure to perform duties as described in your job description or breach of company policies or procedures as set out in the Cypress Employee Handbook or Department Manuals.
